When a transgendered employee goes through transition, they are likely going through the most emotionally overwhelming time of their life. Every relationship that they are in changes. On top of that, they are having to cope with hormonal changes and psychological changes. It is a challenging time and one where they need much support. They need allies that are understanding and able to step back and give them some leeway. They need allies that are there to speak out on their behalf, so others will give them a chance to grow through a difficult time.
Not only though is the individual going through transition, so too is the corporation and the corporation has to deal with coping and even coming out as a gender friendly workplace. The corporation needs to know why supporting transgender employees is healthy for its growth and its business.
What I can provide is knowledge to the corporation, on what is like to go through the whole process. With knowledge, we are able to conquer the fear of the unknown. And when we can conquer our fears, we are able to place our energies on more creative and productive activities that are needed in the workplace.
The best thing a corporation can do is to bring mature transgender voices into the workplace. It helps normalize transgenderism, that which can seem pretty weird at first. We are often taught wrongly about transgenderism in the media and textbooks. By listening to transgender voices, hearts can connect and we can move towards workplace acceptance and maturity.
It is important to understand that the transition time for transgender individuals can be very awkward. That awkwardness is largely because our society is entrenched in such deep gender discrimination for everyone, that we are actually blinded by it. If we can imagine a day when there would be no fear of say “cross-dressing”, then we can imagine a day when there would be no gender discrimination. It was only in our lifetimes that women wore the right to wear pants. It is time to stand up for equal rights and equal gender expression for all.
We can all get there and look forward to a more freer future. We can get there by spending time in the shoes of another person. We can get there by stopping our trains of thought, challenging them, and listening to the voices of people of gender and learn.
The bottom line is that accepting transgender individuals in the workplace is a huge step in the direction of gender equality. It is a huge step in the direction of equality for everyone. And that means more productivity because everyone feels safe.

I offer two primary workshops and either work alone or with LGBT associates depending upon what your budget and needs are. My passion is transgenderism and gender diversity. I use gender in the broadest sense and include sexuality as a subset of gender. Hence, my workshops are on sexuality and gender. I also include LGBT youth as much of my background is working with youth.

I work with gay men, lesbian women, transgender men, cross-dressers and family allies. The mix of panels and the resulting talks are amazingly powerful and life changing for everyone in the room. |
